Why We Still Light Candles

Objects With Souls

There are objects that serve a purpose, and there are objects that seem to remember one.

A chair worn smooth at the arms.
A desk darkened where hands once rested.
A clock that ticks differently at night.

Such things feel changed by their passage through time — not damaged, but altered. They carry the trace of use, presence, intention. We sense it instinctively, even when we cannot explain it. These are objects with souls.

Before mass production, objects were not disposable. They were lived with. Repaired. Passed on. Their materials aged alongside their owners: wood warmed, metal dulled, wax softened. Time did not diminish them — it completed them.

Candles once belonged to this world.

Wax was precious. Flame was deliberate. A candle was not lit casually, but with awareness — to mark an evening, to accompany thought, to illuminate a room that mattered. Its glow shaped faces, softened walls, slowed conversation. It was not background, but presence.

To light a candle was to acknowledge time passing.

Today, we are surrounded by objects that arrive already finished — smooth, sealed, untouched by use. They are designed to remain unchanged, as if resisting life itself. And yet, we still return to flame.

We light candles not because we need them, but because something in us remembers what they once meant.

At Maison Impériale, we think of each candle as a decorative object before it is a fragrance. A small artifact. Something that belongs on a table, a desk, a shelf — even unlit. Its purpose is not only to scent a room, but to inhabit it.

Wax, flame, and fragrance working together to create atmosphere — not spectacle.

Our compositions begin not with trends, but with themes: a place, a figure, a moment suspended in history. The fragrance follows the idea, not the other way around. Notes are chosen not for immediacy, but for resonance — how they unfold, linger, and fade.

Because memory does not arrive all at once.

A candle burns down. Its shape changes. The wax pools, the flame lowers, the scent deepens. In this, it mirrors the objects we cherish most — those that do not remain pristine, but become more themselves with time.

To live with such an object is to accept impermanence — and to find beauty in it.

This is why candles endure.
Not as decoration alone, but as ritual.
Not as product, but as presence.

An object with a soul does not demand attention.
It earns it — quietly, over time.
